The World Is New

It is sometimes stunning to see how one man’s action can touch so many people at once. Sometimes we don’t even realize that things we do have such a great impact.

The sun is glowing in the sky, making everything around look beautiful. A usual weather for California.

“I’m coming back to Germany”, whispers Jürgen to himself and smiles – happily and a bit wistfully.

He is thinking about his new work and the chances – reasons – to go home more often, because no matter how much he loves it here, with his wife and children, he is still missing his home, his country. There will be much more opportunities from now on to see them all – his family, his friends. And to spend a night in a small room above the bakery and to be woken up by the aroma of fresh bread, like so many years ago…

“I’m coming home”, whispers he and laughs.

Taking a cup of tea from his wife’s hands, he is still smiling as brightly as the sun above. It is a happy day.

“So?” Debbie takes another cup and sits down closer to him.

“I’m coming back to Germany”, answers he.

She nods. She is thinking about coming back to this crazy routine – constant flights over the ocean, sleepless nights and shift of time zones, and how tired he always looks after every trip, and if his health will be able to take it all over again…

But she doesn’t say it all out loud. The happiness on her husband’s face is certainly worth it all.

And she herself lived in Europe for many years. She understands all too well what it means to miss your home and the ones you hold dear.

“Good decision”, she smiles and kisses him gently.

The evening has turned to night already, and the stars are so bright tonight.

“I’m coming back to Germany”, the voice from the phone is quiet and light, and Joachim can clearly hear the joy in it.

“So, commentator instead of coach?”

“This was the only way to balance work and family. So, I’m back to living on the plane, can you imagine?” And Jürgen laughs.

Joachim laughs too. He is thinking about the chances Jürgen’s new job gives them – time they can spend together, seeing each other without the need to hide from the press, and Jürgen’s constant presence in Germany once or twice a month, like before when they were working together…

But somewhere in the back of his mind there are other thoughts. He thinks that Jürgen never told him anything till the decision has fallen, and maybe he isn’t even the first to know about it, and who knows what are the real reasons of Jürgen’s return or who is this reason…

He doesn’t say any of it, because it doesn’t matter in the long run.

“I’m glad you’ve taken this job”, answers he quietly.

Morning sun is streaming through the curtains, and white teapots are already on the table.

Daniela folds a newspaper and puts it down carefully.

“So you say Jürgen is coming back to Germany?” Asks she nonchalantly.

“Yes, for a short periods of time, he told me yesterday”, answers he in the same light tone.

She nods. She is thinking that this is an unfortunate turn of events, and she would be glad to never see this man in Germany again, because now Joachim will…

But she will never say anything like that. After all she doesn’t have any proff, she doesn’t even know for sure if Joachim has a lover and if this lover is indeed Klinsmann. But she still can’t help but think that it is a bad news.

“I didn’t expect him to come back”, remarks she off-handedly, pouring herself a glass of juice.

Joachim only smiles.

That’s one way to learn the news.

Lothar doesn’t even know if he is surprised. He’s learned long time ago by his own experience – with Jürgen ‘expect the unexpected’ is the only correct approach.

And he honestly didn’t expect the websites to greet him with such titles: “Klinsmann is coming back to Germany”.

Looking at the monitor, he is thinking about the things that can happen, and no matter how many miles lie between Austria and Germany it’s still much closer than America, and for sure he’ll be able to find reasons to see Jürgen again, and maybe, maybe…

And there is a rational part of his mind that tries to tell him that nothing has changed, nothing will ever change, and letting the hope grow now will only mean more pain later. But right now he couldn’t care less, there’s only one thing on his mind right now, and he smiles and whispers softly, as if afraid to say it out loud:

“He’s coming back”.
