When the Dancer You Have Loved Walks Out the Door

“I love you”.

The room is filled with sunshine, and Jürgen’s hair is like a halo around his head.

“I’m sorry, Joachim”.

“I love you”.

He is sitting on the bed. On the same bed where some hours ago they were making love, and the sheets are still keeping the warmth of their bodies. Sunlight is blinding, but he’s unable to close his eyes. He’s looking at the man standing before him, trying to catch every little detail, to keep it in his memory – forever, because there is nothing but memory left to him from now on.

“We both knew it won’t last”.

“I love you”.

Their voices are soft, but every word is like a thunder in the silence of the room.

“I never wanted to hurt you, Joachim”.

“I love you”.

Jürgen’s voice is sad, and he knows that it’s not easy for Jürgen too. He wishes Jürgen would smile, because he wants to see this beautiful smile directed at him – for the last time.

“I’m sorry”.

“I love you”.

Just three words, over and over, said in a calm tone, like some strange incantation. Not a plea, not an endearment, not a promise. He knows that they won’t change anything. He’s not trying to change anything. He simply says these words because it’s the last time he will have a right to say them. And he speaks – saying these words that he never needed before, because all his actions spoke much more louder than every phrase. But now he needs to say it, as many times as possible, needs to give voice to his feelings, to give everything he can before Jürgen walks away.

“You deserve much more than I could ever give to you”.

“I love you”.

“It will pass, Joachim”.

“I love you”.

Jürgen bends down and kisses his forehead – just a gentle touch of his lips, with no hint of passion that was once between them.

“I’m sorry, Joachim. I’m so sorry”.

“I love you”.

Jürgen touches his face, carefully, as if touching a porcelain doll. The last caress, one more thing to remember, to keep with him forever, for the rest of his life, and it seems to be so long a time…

“Farewell, Joachim”.

“I love you”.

Soft footsteps, the door opens and then shuts quietly, and the bed is soft, and the sunlight is not blinding anymore.

“I love you”.

Charade

He jerks up on the bed, unable to draw a breath for a second. Darkness surrounds him, and the room is silent, except for a soft breathing of a man sleeping beside him.

Nightmare. A dream that seemed so natural, so real that he still feels the tears burning in his eyes. But a dream nonetheless. He inhales deeply, trying to calm his racing heartbeat. Just a nightmare.

“Joachim, what?”

Jürgen’s voice is barely above a whisper. He shakes his head, trying to shake off the fear he still feels.

“A dream”, he’s still shaking, but his tone is almost normal. Almost. Jürgen sits up too, touching his shoulders gently.

“Want to tell?”

‘We both knew it won’t last’.

He shudders again. No matter how real it felt, it was nothing more than a dream. Just his fear of losing the man he loves, played before his eyes by his subconsciousness. But at this hour, when it’s so dark around, it’s just so hard to discern between dreams and reality.

“It’s nothing. Just a weird dream”.

Jürgen’s hands are moving over his back, soothing him, helping him to come back to his senses.

“Everything will be alright”.

He sighs and leans back into the soft embrace.

“I’m sorry I woke you”.

“Hush”, Jürgen kisses him lightly. “Everything will be alright”.

The hands around him are strong. Real. Jürgen’s lips are trailing over his temples, chasing all traces of nightmare away.

Just a dream.
