Coming Around Again (2)
"Where have you been?"
Oh, Joachim is so not in the mood for dealing with obviously worried Daniela right now. He's aware that she has a right to be worried - he's forgotten to call yesterday. Not surprising - after the scene he's witnessed he wasn't thinking clearly, and Daniela was the last thing on his mind. Still is.
Markus turns away to hide a wry smile. He of all people knows that Joachim is lying. There's the temptation to ask how did his brother manage to spend the night at Flick's appartment without Markus noticing his presence. But he manages to deal with it - for Daniela's sake.
"Jogi! And here I was thinking that you're a perfect husband", he laughs. What was so interesting that you've forgotten even to call your wife?"
Daniela notices the spark in Markus's eyes when Hansi Flick's name is mentioned. And even though she's worried and distressed - Jogi's strange behavior, his disappearance yesterday and his moodiness now is a reason enough to worry. And his nerves, his almost scandal with the press that makes her heart go out for her beloved... But even so she's happy to see Markus and Hansi, great friends that they are, become closer and closer, and seeing her brother-in-law and Jogi's - her own - friend like that is a joy to her.
"I bet that they were working again. Weren't you, Jogi?"
Joachim tries to look properly chastised and hopes that his face is betraying nothing of the feelings raging inside him. Once again he’s left to wonder if Daniela is as stupid as she looks sometimes or she just doesn’t care. Her ignorance annoys the hell out of him. And he’ll have to call Hansi and tell him about the night they’ve spent together working – just in case…
“I’m sorry, love”.
Daniela smiles at him, at the tenderness of his voice and his bowed head. She sometimes wishes Jogi wasn’t constantly in the limelight, and this is one of such moments. Though she knows that he couldn’t live without it anymore. It’s too important to him – his work, his team, his popularity. If only it didn’t take so much from him.
“I understand. But next time”, she grins, “you’d better call. I really was worried”.
Markus marvels at his brother’s roleplaying ability. He could bet he knows where Jogi’s spent the last night. And he didn’t spend it well, too – remarks he with a trace of pleasure. This dark look is indication enough that something isn’t going well. Serves him right.
“You’re a perfect wife, my dear”, he smiles and leans closer to her to whisper loudly. “I would have hit him with a frying pan the moment he’s stepped inside”.
Daniela looks at her two men laugh and finally lets out her breath. Everything is fine. She was afraid that Jogi was with… someone else, but this someone else turned out to be a friend and the most trusted co-worker. Now she feels herself guilty because she’s allowed herself to doubt Jogi.
“And end up without a husband? Thank you, Markus, my dear, I prefer things to stay as they are”.
Markus watches Joachim light up a cigarette. The memory flashes to Flick’s fingers, holding the lighter. If only he could stop thinking about it.
“You’re a lucky bastard, Jogi”.
Joachim looks at Daniela, who is busying herself with tea-cups. If Markus knew just a few things about his personal life, he wouldn’t have said that.
“So I am”.
